LMG Touring Delivers Colossal Production for “Lindsey Stirling: Home for the Holidays”

LMG Touring recently supported the production and recording of Lindsey Stirling’s 2020 online holiday special, “Lindsey Stirling: Home for the Holidays,” providing audio, lighting and LED as well as the location for the shoot in the LMG Las Vegas Studio.

Historically, Lindsey Stirling’s holiday special was always a live tour. Instead of cancelling the show due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she turned to LMG to transform the performance into a filmed pay-per-view production that could be delivered right to her fans’ homes.

“We have been working with Lindsey Stirling and her team since 2014, and it’s been great to see the relationship evolve with each production more creative and ambitious than the last. Working on a film project with them been such a wonderful experience and everything went very smoothly,” says Craig Mitchell, LMG Touring Managing Director.

“The goal was to capture her tour performances like dynamic music videos instead of your traditional multi-cam live show,” says Stephen Wayne Mallett, who served as director, editor, and executive producer on the project. “In addition to performances, Lindsey wrote hilarious short-form comedic skits and messages of peace and hope during these hard times.”

As a one-time shoot, Lindsey’s team along with LMG were able to push to new heights with the creative concept, choreography and technology, resulting in a spectacular show that included an iconic, jaw-dropping hair hanging performance. “As a director, I wanted to bring Lindsey’s vision to life in an epic fashion. My goal was to keep viewers at home glued to the screen. It was important to make people laugh, cry, and feel a sense of wonder,” says Mallett.

In order to achieve the complex choreography, lighting and visuals, the team utilized LMG’s Colossal Cube, located in the LMG Las Vegas Studio. The Colossal Cube boasts a massive 50 ft. wide LED floor, 19 ft. high LED walls, and a 31 ft. stage depth, making it the perfect setting for the intricate production.

“We based the flow and concepts on some of the creative we have toured with in the past, but the setting of the studio and the additional space and time, when compared to a tour, allowed us to really flesh out ideas. A lot of things that had been confined to video content or small props and roll-on set pieces became full stage sets. We really aimed to bring to life all of the ideas that had been impractical on past tours,” says Alec Spear, set designer for the production.

While Lindsey’s holiday special production did not utilize the Colossal Cube’s Extended Reality (xR) capabilities, the team appreciated having a seamless three-wall video surface to extend the viewer’s perspective in other unique ways that complemented the physical sets.

Stephen Mallett - Director & Executive Producer

“The Colossal Cube is a filmmaker’s dream because it gives us the ability to transport the talent and the viewer into different dimensions. When you shoot someone on a green screen, you have to describe the scene to them and hope they have a vivid imagination. With the Colossal Cube, the backgrounds are live, high definition, and bright. This dynamic imagery and energy flow into the psyche of the cast and crew. Visually, the images reflect on the talent and feel real. The Colossal Cube is a game changer”

Staying true to their goal to shoot each performance like a music video instead of the easier live-show, multi-camera approach meant that the team was on a tight filming schedule. “We covered each piece like a full-blown music video,” says Mallett. “The camera moves needed to be dynamic and specific to match the flow and intensity of the music and choreography.”

In bringing these complex numbers to life, safety was a top priority for the LMG team. While Lindsey trained with hair hanging professionals in the months leading up to the shoot, the LMG team partnered closely with her team to develop trusted solutions to ensure her safety. “Scott England and Kevin Maas, along with Lindsey’s Tour Rigger Glenn Dinicola, were able to devise and do the math on a complex truss rig with outriggers to mitigate swing as Lindsey performed,” says Spear.

COVID safety also remained top of mind during the production. LMG’s COVID Compliance Officer Justin Brassard ensured everyone on set was being safe, wearing masks correctly and following COVID protocols. Prior to the shoot, all crew members completed a mandated quarantine and were tested on-site upon arrival, receiving access to the studio with a negative result.

Not only did the immense size of the Colossal Cube support the team’s creative vision, but the Las Vegas Studio’s various spaces provided the team with additional filming opportunities for the holiday special. “We were extremely excited to host Lindsey and her team at our new studios. She and her team utilized every inch of the space. From the main performances on the LED stage and the main floor, to the skits filmed in the dressing rooms and open spaces, the final cut really shows off its versatility. We are excited to continue to bring in more artists and unique productions,” says LMG Account Executive Juliana Stern.

“The LMG team was like a calvary that came to our aid 24/7,” says Mallett. “They were always there to help us achieve our goals on an emotional and practical level, which is rare. The LMG staff knew the stage and equipment inside and out. They sourced additional gear and provided hands-on support. It’s special to work with a company like LMG.”

The all-new, hour-long “Lindsey Stirling: Home for the Holidays” online streaming special was a resounding success, selling out both ticketed viewings and drawing more than 100,000 views from tens of thousands of fans and families around the world.

This livestream event was the band’s first show since April and featured their latest album, “What the Dead Men Say.”

According to Trivium’s Tour Manager Charlie Bybee, the band was about to embark on a new two-year touring cycle when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, canceling all tours and live events.

“The band was already knee deep in commitments to all-new production,” he says. “Being that they now had a bunch of new production elements as well as a brand-new record—but no shows—the band wanted to find some way to incorporate all they had been planning into a digital livestream to release the record.”

Initially, the creative concept for the show was a wooded area, which morphed into scenic carts designed by Sooner Routhier and fabricated by Gallagher Staging Nashville.
